Introduction

This is a dictionary of Spanish slang as found in Argentina, especially in the Rioplatense dialect, i.e. the dialect spoken around the basin of the Río de la Plata (where Buenos Aires is) and upstream on the basin of the Paraná River (around Rosario and up to the cities of Santa Fe and Paraná).

I started compiling words and expressions from my native Rioplatense dialect of Spanish years ago, and posted them in my website… the many incarnations thereof. This is the last attempt. As always, it’s work in progress.

I’m not a professional dictionary maker, linguist, lexicographer, or anything of the sort. If you spot mistakes, kindly report them to me. Likewise for suggestions, requests, or doubts.

If you find this site useful or funny or both, please Stumble it, Technorati fave it, etc.
The previous version of this dictionary is located at argentineslang.blogspot.com. It’s no longer being maintained and only exists because I don’t want to lose web traffic from people who haven’t updated the link. Don’t go there; it will only redirect you here after 5 seconds.

Hello, very nice site, very interesting dictionary. We are currently making a podcast on Argentine slang which you can find at http://www.briteach.com.ar/podcast/BAGV.xml or in itunes as Argotango. It’d be very nice to get in touch with you but don’t really see a way to contact you (it may be me) on this page. If you’re interested please email us on argentineslang@gmail.com. Thanks and congrats!

THANK YOU for making this site! It has become very useful in my studies.

I didn´t know where else to post this comment because there was a problem with posting to the phrase I wanted to comment on. The phrase “ma qué” DOES come from Italian like you said. The word “ma” means “but”, as in when you are contradicting something. So when an Argentinean says “ma qué” it seems like it would almost be like saying “What are you talking about?!”. Hope that helps! Congrats on the site again!

I was wondering if you were interested in a link exchange.

My name is Diego and I created the site Expose Buenos Aires (http://exposebuenosaires.com), which is mostly about Argentine culture, language, and how to go about doing things Buenos Aires (such as find work, find an apartement, etc.). I started the site in October of 2008, and post about 1 new article a week. I currently have over 100 pages, and am ranked in the Top 10 on Google for a large number of keyword terms.

You have the best resource available for Argentine Slang, and I would like to and I was hoping you would be interested in exchanging links.

Thanks for your time, I am awaiting your reply.

Regards,
Diego
